Ask away...

How do I apply & what is the closing date for applications?

Recruitment commences in March-May each year. Please keep reviewing this page for more information and details of how to apply for a Manufacturing Apprenticeship with Unilever. The closing date will be displayed once the annual recruitment round opens.

What are the entry requirements?

You must be aged 16 or above on 1st September. Five GCSEs or equivalent (Grades C or above) minimum – including Maths, English and Science. We are also looking for skills across team working and problem solving, as well as the ability to communicate well with others and a willingness to take the initiative.

If I don't have the minimum grades can I still apply?

Unfortunately not - we can only accept applicants who have achieved the required qualifications or above – the additional academic challenges would be too difficult to achieve if you do not already have this minimum level.

How long does an apprenticeship last?

4 years

What will the training programme involve?

Where is the college located?

Unilever only uses further education colleges which it has nominated as Centres of Excellence. The majority of apprentices attend West Cheshire College near Chester. For apprentices not local to the area, accommodation is provided at a nearby Guest House close to the centre of Chester. Unilever fully supports hotel and travel costs for apprentices staying away from home for the duration of the training.

Do I have to buy my own workwear & safety equipment?

No. Unilever will provide all apprentices with workwear, tools and equipment necessary to operate both at college and in the workplace.

If I am successful in being offered an apprenticeship with Unilever, when does the programme start?

September each year. A formal Unilever induction takes place at the nominated factory site, to learn about the business, its products, customers – as well as health and safety rules and regulations, before you would go off to College.

Where are the vacancies located?

Mobility is key - vacancies could exist in any of our manufacturing plants around the UK. Once the vacancies are announced, sponsoring sites offering opportunities will be highlighted.

What career prospects will I have?

On successful completion of your 4 year apprenticeship, the development plan continues, ensuring a career path is in place after the completion of the programme. Being part of a Global corporation such as Unilever, information about all career opportunities and positions are displayed as part of Unilever’s Open Job posting policy.

Will I be expected to travel to other sites?

Yes, occasionally. Normally you will be based at one for the duration of your apprenticeship, but work placements will be included in the apprenticeship programme from time to time. This provides apprentices to learn more Unilever and its various plants and provides you with opportunities to learn about new technologies, product ranges, various tools and techniques. The location of these placements will be discussed with you by your local site coordinator and any necessary travel/accommodation arrangements will be provided by Unilever.

Who will support me once I have started?

The Unilever Apprenticeship programme has a robust structure within each factory site, where Apprenticeship Coordinators (supported by experienced engineering trainers and mentors) have been put in place to monitor & performance manage the apprentices as well as the programme, providing opportunities for you to develop and to 100% support you through this programme

Is college full-time or part-time?

You will see from the programme details above, that during the first year you will attend college full time. Thereafter it will be day or block release. There will be occasional weeks during college holidays that you will have the option to return to your nominate site or to take holidays.

Why is it called a manufacturing apprenticeship scheme?

To manufacture and distribute products, there is a number of departments and team involved in the process from beginning to end. Engineering skills will form 90% of your training, but it is important for us to educate you in the other aspects of the manufacturing supply chain.

Why do I want an apprenticeship?

You will have a job, a salary, work towards qualifications for your future and receive focussed training that will benefit you and the company.

Where can an apprenticeship take me in Unilever?

An apprenticeship can lead to further education through foundation degrees with local colleges and universities. On completion of your apprenticeship, career opportunities within Unilever globally are numerous if you have the determination to achieve. Your apprenticeship can give you a fantastic opportunity to progress in the business but you shouldn’t be under any illusions that career progression will come easy. You have to work hard, constantly be on the lookout for opportunities, and be willing to do whatever it takes to succeed. Above all, we believe that a “can do” attitude is essential if you aspire to progress in the company.

What do I need to do next?

To apply for an apprenticeship with Unilever UK, you must have completed full time education, have the ability to gain high-level skills and qualifications and have met the entry requirement.
